Peter G. Hobstetter, 77, Feb. 21, 1946, passed away peacefully Aug. 24, 2023, surrounded by his wife, children, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother, Dorothy (Graves) Hobstetter in 2006, his father, James P. Hobstetter in 2010, and brother Jeffrey Hobstetter in 1972. Peter and his wife Marianne (Griffin) Hobstetter were together for 42 years, raising a son Kevin, and twin daughters Sara and Erin. He leaves behind grandchildren Hannah, Griffin and Evelyn (Kevin), and McKenna (Sara).
Peter was raised in Oakwood, Ohio, the second oldest of six siblings. He graduated from Oakwood HS in 1964, attended Colgate University for two years, enlisted and served a tour in Vietnam then returned to complete his degree at Colgate.
Peter was known for his wicked sense of humor, which was unfortunately passed on to his children, nephews, and nieces. His 40-year aviation career began by washing planes while at Colgate in exchange for flying lessons. He was artistically well known for his precise illustrations and line drawings of historical homes. Especially dear to Peter’s heart was running marathons, where his best time was 3:06. Of special note was his participation in the “Dick’s Den marathons for ten years, always finishing well. Peter was fortunate that his father (Hobby) was one of the founders of the Dayton Polo Club, for which he played on the team for many years. Peter was passionate about history, particularly regarding WWII. He developed his expertise and created two documentaries, one in particular following one of his father’s strategic flight missions.
Peter served 26 years in the Ohio National Guard as a Master Army pilot in the 73rd Infantry Brigade and the 107th Cavalry Aviation. In Vietnam he served as a scout pilot flying both OH6 and Huey’s with over 1200 combat hours. He received numerous decorations, including the Bronze Star. Following his military service, Peter flew with the State of Ohio in both the ODNR and ODOT, retiring in 2007 as Chief Pilot of Aviation Flight Services. In 1992 he was awarded the Top Gun Pilot Weapons competition at the 107th Cavalry Annual Training.
Services will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3047 E Dublin-Granville Rd, Columbus, OH 43231. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm until the service time at 4:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will follow immediately at the Hobstetter home.
