Leonard Coon

Leonard A. Coon Jr., of Clinton Road, Mount Vernon, passed away on Tuesday November 15, 2005 at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. He was born on May 26, 1932 in Bangs, Ohio to Leonard A. and Gladys (Grimm) Coon Sr..

Leonard Served in the United States Army from 1949 to 1952 and spent the next 31 years in the National Guard where he served in the Korean Conflict, Vietnam and Desert Storm. He worked for Lamb Glass before retiring in 1981 after 26 years of employment with the United States Postal Service. Leonard also served as the Knox County Veteran Service officer for over 16 years and spent 8 years on the Commission. He was a member of Hope Community Church, Mount Zion Lodge #9 F&AM, Aladdin Temple Shrine, Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Moose, Amvets and Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his mother, his loving wife of 55 years Odelva (Ridenbaugh) Coon, two sons, Eritt (Shelley) Coon of Mount Vernon, Brad (Joan) Coon of Mount Vernon, five grandchildren, Shad Bevington, Corby Coon, Nick Coon, Craig (Hollie) Coon, Lori (Mark) Briegel, four great grandchildren, Camden, Colin, Courtney, Lyndsay, three sisters, Nora May Carpenter, Phyllis Ann (James) Vernon, Mona (John) Wolford all of Mount Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Friends may call on Thursday from 1 to 3 PM and 5 to 7 PM at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral will be held on Friday at 2 PM. Burial with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. Rev. Dennis Moles will be officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hope Community Church and can be left at the funeral home.
